Thank god your universal translator is up to sorting out J-speak! For Jason:

Sites of note:

http://www.kbb.com/
(with the glorious kelly blue book site you can determine about what you should pay for a car)

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/index.htm
(consumer reports can give rate of repair data, about how long until a particular model croaks)

when you find the lemon of your dreams:

http://www.carfax.com/
(will tell you how much damage that actual car, via vin #, has taken)

other than that, car dealers are desperate, so take them hard and fast, and without lube. I recommend going 15% below low kelly blue book with the hopes that they are desperate to unload. (this will be especially likely for american brands ) (you'll likely end up paying low to mid kelly blue book range)

Angies dad reminded her:

Do not go to a friendly freddy, smiling sam ect. used car dealer, they generally go to car auctions, buy crap and put spray paint on it. (car fax could help but not totally) if you must, go to a new car dealership, where someone probably traded in a reasonably good car, but even better is a private seller if they are selling due to a death in the family, won a car ect.
