lets not worry to much about the magic. I can handle that for you.

1. What is your day job? so far we have a bum, a cop, a noble, a thief, and a book store owner

2. Think of why you would have awoken. This should be a fairly traumatic experience given what we have discussed.

3. pick 3 sentence like descriptions of your character. I think the rest will work itself out.

But given that the magic is suppose to be based on some pseudo-science that i've either been working on or at least thinking about coming up with an acceptable science seems like the better place to start since depending on the different levels of craziness that it would produce why my life should have developed to. Sorry if this seems confusing but I normally build my back-stories in reverse like this so that by the time you look at them in proper order they have a logical psychological progression or lack thereof in my crazier of characters.

Cheyne uses a multi-axial approach to explaining the least conceivable zen state and does not afraid. You sir are not the one seeking forum enthusiasm as a means to judge character. May this game float the crest of the moon.
