Press Release on Blackout Night
“Two weeks after what is already being referred to as ‘Blackout Night’, the City’s officials are only now beginning to piece together what exactly went wrong. Investigators say that during the night’s severe thunderstorms, a malfunction at the local power plant caused large portions of the City to lose power. With the loss of power, which has yet to be restored in some parts of the city, several groups decided to take advantage of the darkness and weather to forward their own agendas.
Regional gangs staged several attacks on one another, culminating in a fight on the outskirts of the City that resulted in dozens of deaths, both among the gangs themselves and the law-abiding citizens caught in the crossfire. This gang violence was the culmination of over a year of escalating conflict; after the many deaths, leaders of the most powerful gangs have told CNN that they intend to cease all hostilities for the foreseeable future, with one prominent leader quoted as saying ‘I don’t neva wanna see a night like that again; there was just too much killin’ goin’ on’.
In the chaos resulting from the darkness and violence, hundreds of individuals, most of whom police have no way of catching, looted stores and homes, resulting in property loss expected to reach upwards of 20 million dollars. Local pounds and Zoos were also vandalized, with hundreds of animals being set free. Currently only 80% of the animals have been returned, and police are investigating possible links to animal rights and environmental activism groups.
Possibly the most disturbing news for the world market however is the major hit taken by the medical and weapons developer, Shadow Corp. The corporation had recently placed a major installation responsible for both research and marketing within the city, and during the power outage several explosions occurred throughout the building, resulting in the loss of important experimental designs and customer information, massive structural instability, and ultimately the building’s demolition 3 days later. Company officials are saying that the explosions were due to sabotage from the same environmental activist groups suspected in the City’s zoo vandalism, but officials and public alike are concerned with different questions. What was stored in Shadow Corps’ building that could have caused such intense explosions? Anonymous sources have told CNN that there were weapons experiments underway that would violate city safety regulations and several international treaties. Shadow Corp denies any such research, and has opened its other facilities worldwide for investigation, but many are nonetheless calling for the removal of Shadow Corp facilities from their cities, causing stocks to plummet and several major contracts, including those with the United States and Japanese governments, to be dropped.
In a final odd twist to Blackout Night, college and high school students throughout the region have started throwing ‘Blackout’ parties, at which the lights go out after sunset and the only light is from glowsticks and electronic accessories such as cell phones. At Blackout parties, along with the music, sex and drugs so common to the rave scene a few years earlier, there is an added element of danger. Fights often occur, and several rapes have been reported, but despite their danger, or possibly because of it, the parties are already becoming rather popular. Some groups are planning for Blackout anniversary parties, and police are worrying that next year there might just be another Blackout Night. This is Jeri Davis, CNN news.”

a local high end bank was robbed. niether the amount nor the method have been publicized. it is just a minor blip to those without finance, underworld, or police influence, but to those with it, several people have lost fortunes, and as only 100k is insured by the fdic... well, maybe the bank's insurance will cover it. so those with accounts there hope anyway.

in other news, a man was caught on video by an annonymous person wielding a phone cam. what was he doing? Playing with wolves at the zoo. unfortunately his face was blurred because of the low camera quality, so the police have little hope of catching him, but the zoo assures the public that "security for the animals, and their proper treatment, is our utmost concern, and such tresspassers will not be tolerated."
