book clubs should be fun... you people are stodgy and busted. I agree with Steven, we are gonna make our own book club... for cool kids who like to enjoy what they read, not LEARN from it, phsht!

I suggest something from the golden age like...Heinlein or Asamov.
All things in moderation...Except syrup.

I would be happy to read some non-fiction, like important works like the prince, or others. I would also be quite happy to read fiction works, even old and dusty ones like Treasure Island. I'd be delighted to return to some asimov, or some doc smith, or others.

The point of the book club is to read and discuss, but more importantly to enjoy.

It appears that a schism is forming in the book club. Well, we don't all have to read the same books just because we're all in the book club. If someone wants to do some club reading, but doesn't want to read non-fiction, they should still be able to, and its a club if multiple people are reading together.

I think that, while keeping the number of threads down increases posting, it can also create an illusion of rules and structure that isn't necessarily present.

I propose that we solve this problem by making this the main thread, and create two new threads, such as fiction book club and non-fiction book club. Or a new thread for each book, to help keep that discussion on track.

Does this solution work for people?

I'd hate to be a dick cheeseburger but actually no, nobody needs to play devils advocate, and doing so is likely to prevent anything productive from happening, or distract from real issues that real people have, and keep them from being resolved.

/end rant

Anyway, anybody up for splitting the book club? Not sure I see other solutions.

We could also set up rotations for who proposes the next book. If fact I'll insist on it. This way if we decide not to split the club, each person at least gets to pick a book to read.

To be completely frank, I probably won't be participating in any form of book club, so my stance regarding what should be read can be safely ignored. I just hate feeling compelled to read any sort of anything, since I read entirely for recreation. For me its like someone telling me I can only have fun in a certain way. Fuck that. Anyway, yeah, there's my reason and some of the reasoning behind it (and also an explination for my poor grades in high school english :P).

steven you aren't really much of a joiner. though why not discuss the books you have read or are reading?

anyway, i don't think it is necessary to split off. we can discuss everything here. as of right now all we've done is talk about talking, so there really ahs been no pressing need for any new threads, and even if it arises, we can just set it up then.

but i see no problem discussing multiple works at the same time.
