I find them interesting. Sadly the military spoiled me. I like firing m-16's. they are akin to firing toy guns, except for the killing people thing.

I was actually going to post this myself!!

I was thinking of 'guns' as two or three hobbies, actually. I would be interested in brushing up on my rifle skills, and going hunting. I think target shooting and the whole process of hunting are really two different hobbies.

I'd be more than happy to join anyone going to the range, as long as either they don't mind me renting one from the shop or loaning me a piece.

I used to be a pretty damn good shot actually, I could make the 300 meter shot over iron sights with the m-16 90% of the time. The m-16 is kind of a wacky rifle though, I'd be into getting a JAR (just another rifle) and finding somewhere I can practice LRM (long range marksmanship), which could eventually lead to hunting for edible animals that don't bite bait.

Should hunting and fishing be a separate thread?

No, just call it Hunting/Fishing.

The less separation, the more ativity in a thread, at least in my experience.

I like having a gun, and I like marksmanship, but hope to never kill anything with one, hunting or otherwise. Going on fishing trips is tramatic enough.

If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

I prefer the bow and arrow, although guns are fun to shoot...especially big ones...that you can barely hold onto...and leave the target in pieces.

My fondest memories of marksmanship involve firing through wooden fences, as children played on the other side...

so, lets talk some shop.

The internet seems to disagree totally over 9mm vs 45 for personal defense pistol calibers. I think the 57 is an interesting alternative, but a lot of people complain that it isn't a 'manstopper' round, and some claim hunting experiences in which it didn't even stop a jackrabbit. On the other hand, the 5.7 is a very accurate round, and the FN Five seveN USG pistol, chambered in the 5.7, has a 20 round capacity and is very light weight, so personal carry and defense seems doable. Some people swear by the weapon.

I've liked the HK Mark 23 for a while, but it's a huge freaking gun and despite its match grade performance seems to follow HKs tradition of making guns accurate by making them heavy, and making guns expensive for no reason.

J-chan: you carry a walther, if I'm not mistaken, any comments?

I am a big fan of 40 s.w. I believe its a good middle ground between 9 and 45.

As far as brands go Taurus makes good stuff cheap, and in my case I can get the extra machining down by family to make up the difference. Though I am a huge fan of Walther hand guns in general the walther p99 both in 9mm and 40s.w. is glorious.

As far as bullet size...does it really matter? I mean if your gonna shoot someone, are going to stop after the first bullet? Seriously, if you empty the clip, even a .22 will probably make the other guy at least a little more docile. You should just go with what's comfortable.

Although, now that I think about it, I am rather drawn to the idea of an automatic 12 gauge (such as the AA12, my new favorite gun) for personal defense. It can destroy an average sized suburban house in under a minute. What could be better for protecting yourself and your loved ones...well maybe a tank, but those are lot harder to get a license for...I checked.

if I'm not carrying it out of a paraniod desire to turn anyone who has the audacity to assault me into a smear on the pavement, I really dont care much about type.

... Though I do have a certian fondness for pump-shotguns.

marksmanship is okay, but i love shooting skeet. or trying, in my case.
