Magic the Gathering vs Television, Film, and Literature

Post by Rusty »

I think this fight is being played out peicemeal all over this forum, so, it's time for a showdown!

Richard Garfield's serialized drivel played out in single paragraph captions on collectible cards, created with little depth and no collaboration by numerous writers, some good, some bad, to establish the illusion of depth to a superficial setting, vs everything else.

I don't think I entirely understand your point. Are you asking us to choose which is more entertaining? Are you just knocking Magic? What's the point.

Magic the gathering has a lot of history and fluff. Granted the best of it is generated by the cards themselves, but doesn't that uniqueness allow to stand above and beyond so much of the other fiction out there.

Every time you sit down to play Magic, your tellng another story, or not it can also be just a game. The cool thing about the game of Magic is it is always diffrent, and differnt types o poeple can pul diffrent things from it. If you like the story, write fan fic., and build themed decks. If you like mechanics, make tier decks and compete for money, just like a sport. If you enjoy interacting with people play casual, and multiplayer.
Diffrent poeple can approach the game with diffrent hopes, and wants, and have those things fullfilled. Sure it started small, but what idea didn't? I don't think Magic has replaced the rest of culture, but instead has become a part of it.
Even more than DnD Magic the Gathering is becoming more and more recognizable by mass culture. People form all walks of life play this game. It is so popular it has a spot on ESPN.
Seriously I don't think you can say that Magic is bigger of better than all the rest of literature, and mass media, but it certainly has place in society. A place it has struggled to climb into.
One other point I want to address, is the 'no collaboration thing'. Perhaps at first this was accurate to some degree, although the game wasn't made and produced by Garfied alone. Today however, Magic the Gathering designers include some of the finest games desigers in the buisness, and some of the most talented fantasy artists in the world. The only place it lacks real favore is unfortunatly it's novels, which truly leave something to be desired from a literary stand point. But this storyverse as a whole is rather complex, and farely well intigrated. It now has a rich history and alot of interesting characters.
If you want me choose which i enjoy more out of the above options, I choose Magic. I don't watch TV, most movies I go see suck, I don't really read all that much any more, and what I do read is boring.
Magic, Magic is always there. I can approach the game from any angle and be entertained. I can invent alternate games with the cards. I can use the given story to make a roleplaying game, and ever time I make a deck its diffrent.
I guess all i'm really trying to say is, "I HATE SAUERKRAUT!" Oh, and I vote Magic the Gathering.
All things in moderation...Except syrup.
